Introducing the Shekinah Tahi Thornless Black Raspberry, a pioneering breakthrough in the world of berry cultivation from the lush landscapes of Shekinah Berry in Auckland, New Zealand. "Tahi," meaning Number One in Māori, stands as the first entirely spineless black raspberry variety, merging the robust, vigorous growth and upright form of traditional raspberries with the unparalleled ease of a thornless harvest. This variety promises to transform the berry gardening experience, offering both novices and experts a hassle-free cultivation and picking journey.

Quick Facts:

  • Origin: Bred with pride at Shekinah Berry in Auckland, New Zealand, Shekinah 'Tahi' is celebrated as the first completely spineless variety of black raspberry.
  • Thornless Convenience: The absence of spines on Shekinah Tahi significantly eases the picking and pruning process, making it a garden-friendly choice for all ages.
  • Flavor Profile & Uses: Boasting large, medium-firm fruits that weigh up to 4.5g, Shekinah Tahi offers a deep black hue and a flavor profile that is both rich and satisfying. These berries are perfect for fresh eating, as well as for making jams, jellies, and desserts.
  • Harvest Season: Shares a harvest season with the Jewel variety, producing an abundant yield of tightly clustered, high-quality fruit.

History:

Shekinah Tahi Thornless Black Raspberry embodies the spirit of innovation, paying homage to the rich cultural heritage of New Zealand through its name and breeding achievement. This variety's introduction to the market is a milestone that signifies a leap forward in berry cultivation, offering a thornless experience without compromising on the quality or flavor of the fruit.

Growing Guide:

  • Plant Plug: Delivered as a small plant plug, with soil, keep cool until planting
  • Growth Habit: Shekinah Tahi's vigorous and more upright growth compared to traditional spiny black raspberry cultivars makes it a standout addition to any berry garden.
  • Soil and Location: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil in a location that receives full sun to partial shade, ensuring the plant's health and maximization of fruit production.
  • Watering and Care: Consistent watering is essential, particularly during dry spells, to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Applying mulch helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, contributing to the plant's overall well-being.
  • Pollination: This self-fertile variety does not require a separate pollinator, simplifying garden planning and maximizing space efficiency.

West Texas Surprise

The plugs arrived with instructions. Refrigerated for 2 days then planted in 7 inch pots (to start with) and growing in partial shade. One looked like it might not make it, but all three seem healthy and are growing a tiny bit bigger and leaves are green. I am surprised, given this climate, to see the healthiness of these raspberry plants. Will have to wait to see how they do now that temps are reaching high 90s and will get hotter. It is so far a West Texas surprise! Thanks!

Hi there, DD! Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with our Tahi Thornless Black Raspberry plugs. We're thrilled to hear that they arrived with instructions and that you followed them by refrigerating them before planting. We're also glad to hear that all three are growing and seem healthy, even in the high temperatures of West Texas. We hope they continue to thrive and surprise you with delicious raspberries in the future. Thank you for choosing our product and happy growing!
