These remarkable special fruit trees have captured the hearts of gardeners for centuries, and now they can thrive right in your backyard.  Of all our varieties, this is the hardiest and will give the highest yields of sweet figs. Can start bearing the second year.

History of the Variety: The Chicago Hardy Fig variety has a story that spans generations. Originating from the ancient lands of the Mediterranean, fig trees have been cherished for their delectable fruits and robust nature for thousands of years. The Chicago Hardy Fig, however, boasts a unique resilience that makes it perfectly suited to the challenging climates of the Windy City and beyond.

Quick Facts: Chicago Hardy Fig

  • Hardiness Zone: Thrives in USDA Zones 5-10, known for exceptional cold hardiness.
  • Spacing: Ideal spacing is 7-12 feet between trees to ensure adequate growth and airflow.
  • Soil Preferences: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil. Tolerant of a range of pH levels, from slightly acidic to neutral.
  • Sunlight Requirements: Requires full sun to part shade, benefiting from at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight for optimal fruit production.
  • Watering Needs: Drought-tolerant once established but benefits from regular watering during dry spells. Aim for about 1 inch of water per week.
  • Fertilization: Responds well to organic fertilizers and compost, enhancing soil health and tree vigor.
  • Bearing Age: Capable of bearing fruit as early as the second year under optimal conditions.
  • Fruit Characteristics: Produces sweet, light, strawberry-like flavored figs. Ideal for fresh consumption, dehydration, and canning.
  • Pollination: Self-pollinating; does not require another fig tree to produce fruit.
  • Pest and Disease Resistance: Shows resistance to common pests and diseases but can be susceptible to fungal problems in certain conditions.
  • Winter Care: Mulch heavily (at least 4 inches) around the base for root insulation. In colder areas, cut back and use 18-24" of straw around it.
  • Container Planting: Suitable for container gardening. Use a large pot with adequate drainage and regular watering

Brief Rooting Instructions: Getting started with cuttings is relatively easy.  Plant it in a well-draining potting mix, ensuring the cutting is buried at least a few inches deep. Water it generously, place it in a warm and sunny spot, and keep the soil consistently moist. Our complete rooting instructions, which we'll send with your order, will guide you through this process step by step.

Spacing and Protection from Cold: Proper spacing and protection from cold are crucial for the thriving of your Chicago Hardy Fig. We recommend spacing your trees at least 7 to 12 feet apart to allow for adequate growth and airflow, although espaliering these plants up a southern facing wall can be done closer and means better protection and yeilds. When it comes to protecting your fig tree from chilly temperatures, mulch generously around the base to insulate the roots.

What are the growing practices?

While we haven't sought organic certification, rest assured that our fig cuttings are cultivated with genuine dedication, free from artificial pesticides or fertilizers, mirroring the thoughtful care you invest in your family's meals. Eating what we grow is a philosophy we live by, ensuring that we raise our produce without noxious pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides. For peak nutrition and flavor, we enrich our soil with compost, rock minerals, and prebiotics, foster habitats for beneficial insects, bees, and earthworms, and align our practices with the rhythm of nature to harvest the finest food.
